What is the most annoying thing about old smartphones that forces consumers to "upgrade"?
There is no denying that the smartphone market has matured and the last few generations of smartphones have seen limited upgrades. Innovation on these devices has been weak and technological “leaps” have been limited to AI, camera performance or a combination of both.

This trend is causing many consumers and even diehard enthusiasts to delay buying the latest smartphones, even skipping generations altogether. Smartphones are now in a similar situation to laptops. Consumers don’t necessarily need to upgrade their phones every year, but wait until the improvements make a noticeable difference.
Unlike laptops, however, smartphones aren’t built to last. They start to break down after just three or four years of use, and even faster if their owners aren’t careful. For many consumers, that may be the only reason to upgrade—not because of excitement about new technology, but because of frustration with old technology.

Technology site Phone Arena conducted a survey with thousands of readers and found out the reasons why users are forced to upgrade to a new smartphone.
The results showed that the biggest reason people bought a new phone was shortened battery life - at over 64%. Next was feeling sluggish - at nearly 18%. Other bad reasons for buying a new smartphone included: Insufficient memory, degraded camera.
