Last week, Huawei beat Samsung to the punch with the Mate XT — the world's first smartphone with a tri-fold screen.
However, it seems that Samsung will not mind as it aims to be the first to introduce another innovative design to the market. This information was provided by The Elec, which said that Samsung is developing a rollable smartphone with a 12.4-inch screen when unfolded. This screen will be much larger than current foldable phones and larger than the Mate XT and its 10.2-inch screen. The phone is also said to have a selfie camera hidden under the screen.
The idea of a Samsung rollable screen smartphone has been around for a long time.
The source claims that Samsung's rollable display smartphone could be released in the second half of 2025, which could make Samsung the first company to market a rollable display smartphone.
The news also comes after LG, Tecno, and Oppo all teased their own rollable smartphones earlier. Oppo, for example, teased a rollable smartphone concept in 2021, while Tecno showed off its own concept last year. As for LG, the company is ready to actually release a rollable smartphone as it has decided to exit the smartphone industry in 2021.
But so far no product has been launched on the consumer market.
The Elec report also suggests that Samsung's mobile division is focusing on cutting costs in order to boost profits. This will come as no surprise to some, as the company has long been conservative when it comes to annual upgrades to its smartphones. Nowhere is this more evident than in the foldable smartphone segment, where the Galaxy maker has fallen behind its rivals in design, battery capacity, and camera hardware.
However, another source confirmed that Samsung has decided to stop producing dummy models for retailers – another move aimed at cutting costs.
