New MacBook Pro, Mac mini and iMac to get M4 chip, launching this year

New Mac models with powerful M4 chips will be launched by Apple later this year.

In his latest Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman revealed that new Mac models with M4 chips will be released later this year. An interesting new detail that Gurman added is that the MacBook Air, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro models will receive the latest M4 processor update in 2025, according to 9to5Mac.

Apple last updated its MacBook Pro and iMac models last October at its “Scary Fast” event, introducing M3 chips across the lineup. The MacBook Pro received a new Space Black finish, as well as a lower-cost model that replaced the old 13-inch MacBook Pro with the Touch Bar. The 24-inch iMac kept most of its design, even the included Magic Mouse, Magic Trackpad, and Magic Keyboard accessories didn’t make the switch to USB-C.

With the new updates coming to Mac models this fall, Gurman doesn’t expect much beyond the introduction of a new M4 chip. The M4 first debuted in the iPad Pro in May, but no Mac models have received the new processor yet. Since the iMac still uses Lightning accessories, Bloomberg predicts that USB-C accessories will appear alongside the 24-inch iMac with the M4 chip later this year.

Gurman said there will be an update to the Mac mini later this year. The Mac mini skipped the M3 chip line and was last updated in January 2023 with the M2 Pro chip, but otherwise the model has not received any major upgrades.

In this new Power On newsletter, Gurman also mentions an interesting new detail:

"While the overall upgrade to the M4 chip is largely focused on making the computer more powerful, there is at least one Mac model that will see more significant changes."

Since switching to Apple Silicon, Apple has given most of its Mac lineup a new look. The MacBook Air , MacBook Pro, and iMac all have new designs. The only models that haven't been redesigned are the Mac Pro and Mac mini.

Apple last updated the Mac Pro in 2022 and reused the same design as the 2019 Mac Pro. This was a confusing decision for many, as the 2019 Mac Pro focused on modular design to support upgradeability, while Apple Silicon largely prevented that. It's clear that the 2019 Mac Pro chassis isn't ideal for Apple Silicon, as it's largely empty.

As for the Mac mini, the design has remained largely unchanged since 2010. The 2010 model lost the DVD drive and Apple changed most of the ports, but it's still the same 7.7-inch square aluminum design.

It’s likely that one of these models will get the “significant changes” Gurman is referring to. After all, next year will be four years since Apple last redesigned the MacBook Pro, and there’s typically a four- to five-year design cycle for the line.
