iPhone 16 Plus "sells better" than expected, iPhone 16 Pro is ignored

According to a famous analyst, the demand for iPhone 16 Pro is lower than expected, pre-orders for iPhone 16 Plus unexpectedly increased by 48%.

Apple is facing lower-than-expected demand for the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, according to new pre-order analysis from analyst Ming Chi-Kuo. Notably, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are selling more units than last year's standard iPhone 15.

Kuo did some analysis over the weekend, based on shipping times on Apple’s website as well as a “supply chain survey.” The analyst found the following:

- Demand for iPhone 16 Pro Max down 16% year-over-year

- iPhone 16 Pro demand down 27% year-over-year

- Demand for iPhone 16 Plus increased 48% compared to last year

- Demand for iPhone 16 increased 10% compared to last year

Interestingly, this year, people are more interested in the standard iPhone than the iPhone Pro, especially the larger iPhone 16 Plus.

The iPhone 16 series is estimated to have sold around 37 million units, down about 12.7% from the iPhone 15 series in its first week on sale. While the iPhone 16 Plus saw strong sales growth, demand for the iPhone 16 Pro fell much more sharply.

According to the analyst, the higher yield on the tetraprism camera (a telephoto camera with 5x zoom capabilities) is the main factor that Apple has more abundant supply for the iPhone 16 Pro Max than last year's iPhone 15 Pro Max. According to Mr. Kuo's data, "Apple" produced 6 million iPhone 16 Pro Max units before they were launched, up 106% compared to last year.

The analyst also said that if Apple Intelligence and other promotions cannot boost sales of the iPhone 16 generation, Apple may deploy more aggressive iPhone product strategies in 2025 to stimulate market demand.
