A Weibo leaker named Mobile Phone Chip Expert has just posted information that the iPhone 17 will have 12GB of RAM. In its statement, Mobile Phone Chip Expert said: “If you want to switch to an AI iPhone, the 2025 iPhone 17 is probably the best choice. This year's iPhone 16 has only 8GB of internal memory, mainly because of cloud AI. Next year's iPhone 17 will have 12GB of memory and will have more edge AI applications.”
12GB RAM is 1.5 times higher than this year's iPhone 16.
There are no further details in this statement, and there is no evidence that 12GB of RAM will be limited to the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max models, as previously rumored. It is likely that the Pro versions will have more RAM, although there are expected to be other significant improvements over the regular iPhone 17 models.
The leak also mentions “more edge AI applications” related to Apple Intelligence functions that are only performed on the iPhone. So while nothing is specified, it’s likely that Apple will no longer rely as much on online AI tools like ChatGPT for Apple Intelligence. More RAM would help with that.
